Building Stronger

  • High peaked roof houses and a-frames have an interesting design that can lead to wasted space. Especially against the inside of the sloped walls where you’d bunk your head constantly is you get too close. So how do you deal with these spaces to maximize use and accentuate the house style instead of hiding it?…

  • The Roccolino

Possibly the cutest little country tower you can find anywhere. Il Roccolino is an old hunting lodge in the Imagna Valley, a sleepy little village in beautiful northern Italy. You can tell this place can get a lot of snow by how far the eaves overhang the structure, letting it fall away from the building. Built in…

  • Constructed in 1927, the Storybook-style Montclair firehouse was designated an Oakland City Landmark in March 1980. While the building received seismic upgrades around 1960, the firehouse was closed in 1993 due to its location on the Hayward fault. Seems safe, then again, when was a gingerbread house in the woods ever safe?

  • Your own solid stone country home on a rushing river with rapids, water falls, and surrounded by acres of forest. About 3.5 hours to the middle of Central Park by car. Not bad considering the history of this property, but it’s a serious drive out of the city. You could say it’s been listed for…

  • The Barn

Modern, minimalist, and rustic combine to make a beautiful open barn style home. I wish the builders, CGH Constructions, gave more information about the house. But from their photos it looks like it can sleep at least 14 people. Most of which fit in a large bunk style room with 4 queen size beds and…

  • Like you’re out camping, but you have a real roof over your head. Or a few rooves in this case, making it look even more like a set of pitched tents. Looks like a great way to get away from city life for a while, but maybe not enough interior space with headroom to live…

  • Seems like it would be the perfect guest room in a snowy cabin somewhere around Jackson Wyoming, basically in the middle of nowhere.  The stone exterior wall makes it feel strong and secure while the rustic wood colors on the other walls and ceiling make it cozy and warm. Unfortunately, the bed needs a headboard…

  • Sleek and modern matte black door lock and handle. It’s not going to go with every home, but the contrast against the warm wood tones here is really nice.  Don’t forget to bring the style throughout the house with matching kitchen cabinet handles.

  • Close to the simplest thing you could do with a couple shipping containers. Really nice in an all black exterior and simple plywood interior walls. I wonder what happens when lots and lots of snow piles up on top? Looks like more than enough room for two small bedrooms off the Y ends with a…

  • Wooden Gears

Nicely made wood gears are are really nice. While they aren’t going to hold up against serious use like metal would, they are a great way to show off your woodworking ability. Wood gears could also be a way to make an adjustable height desk that moves easily and quietly without motors or power.

  • Surf shack just has better alliteration than surf cabin. So don’t let shack confuse you, it’s a really pretty tiny ocean side cabin render. Perfect for catching the sun sets and looking out over the water to see just when the surf is perfect to catch a few waves. With one main window wall facing…

  • Filled with natural light from lots of windows along the raised center aisle roof line, this monitor style barn rendering would make a great workshop or studio. And the rustic batten siding gives it a real country look. What’s better rustic brown or classic barn red? The second image with a gabled extension and privacy…

  • Under cabinet lighting gives the travertine (aka limestone) backsplash a warm glow, texture depth, and brings it together with the warm brown lower cabinetry. Otherwise the kitchen is nearly monochrome with simple thick white marble counters and an almost invisibly flat glass cook top. This would be a really great kitchen.

  • Small and bright asymmetrical a-frame cabin with a huge deck for maximizing your vacation experience. Obviously a render, but would be a really great getaway spot with giant windows and a cozy sloped roof all around to let the snow roll off in the winter.

  • Really interesting and nicely done box corner joinery done with contrasting visible dowel joints. Would be great for drawers or cabinets too. What would you call the X joint in the top? Splined lap joint, maybe? Probably overkill on strength and complication, but looks pretty if you want to show off your detail skills.

  • Lovely tiny cabin with an intense modern angular exterior clad in black metal siding. Which I’m sure is great for soaking up as much heat as possible in those cold winter months. The interior looks super cozy with large skylights and picture windows to let in lots of light and light colored wood walls to…

  • Bright and cozy, this courtyard is illuminated by a wall of gently glowing lanterns. A great example of repeating design without overwhelming the space. With a tree, some grass, and planters it truly is a quiet private space where (well manicured) nature is allowed in.

  • Subtle molding gives a nice touch of old world elegance to this huge interior home space. Otherwise minimalist white wall and flowing curved rails give way to and angular and warm colored parquet flooring. Though, I wish the design was a true herringbone instead of this easier to make chevron pattern. Also really love the…

  • Two cabins juxtaposed beautifully. A cozy old log cabin with a classic red door contrasts amazing with a bright new modern cabin addition. Loving the bright white inside edge of the modern overhang and the light pine wood siding on that face of the cabin.

  • Really beautiful minimal kitchen with warm brass fixtures and a great wood herringbone countertop. Simple and sleek with no backsplash or other distractions. I might hesitate with wood next to the sink like that, but it should be fine with modern sealants.
