Building Stronger

Woodworking

  • Wooden Gears

Nicely made wood gears are are really nice. While they aren’t going to hold up against serious use like metal would, they are a great way to show off your woodworking ability. Wood gears could also be a way to make an adjustable height desk that moves easily and quietly without motors or power.

  • Really interesting and nicely done box corner joinery done with contrasting visible dowel joints. Would be great for drawers or cabinets too. What would you call the X joint in the top? Splined lap joint, maybe? Probably overkill on strength and complication, but looks pretty if you want to show off your detail skills.

  • It’s said that “simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”. This table is the ultimate in understatement and simple elegance. A floating top and square legs with an ever so slight inside bevel shows true forethought and craftsmanship. I could see this as an every day use table in any modern or country home.

  • Dovetail Burl

The juxtaposition or rich burl wood to light strain grain adds really great drama to otherwise boring drawers. And the color contrast nicely shows off the half-blind dovetails.

  • Really nice looking half-blind rounded finger joints around the edges of this walnut step stool.

  • Not everything needs to be made from Walnut. Lighter wood sideboard with really nice dark details on the legs and splines on the corners.

  • Creating a really nice contrast with the walnut? slab, these minimal brass joint keys are functional and beautiful. These would be really nice in a X key wood joint style too.

  • A key in this case refers to the thing used to hold wood together and prevent further cracking or splitting. Usually it’s a called dovetail key or a butterfly joint because of the common shape used. But this modern take is easily as strong and adds some intense color to your project. Other colors look…

  • Maybe it’s just me, but I think this would make an amazing dining table or coffee table in a modern cabin. Woodworking by hand is great, but this would probably only make sense to make with a CNC machine.

  • Just a cute little turned wood bird house. While this looks like a christmas tree ornament, making it large enough to fit cardinals or other brighter feathered birds would be ideal. Probably also needs a more significant attachment method to keep the birds from getting seasick from swaying in the wind.
